Building a Do-It-Yourself Loudspeaker Design

speaker design

Designers use these materials, and sometimes a sandwich of different materials, to prevent a form of distortion called breakup. Breakup occurs when the cone material flexes instead of moving as a perfect piston. Because the cone is driven at a small area at the inside (an area the size of the voice coil), the cone tends to flex, which produces non-linear distortion. Although all dynamic drivers exhibit breakup at a certain frequency, the competent loudspeaker designer makes sure that a driver is never driven by frequencies that would cause breakup. For example, if a woofer has its first breakup mode at 4kHz, the designer would probably operate the driver only up to about 2kHz, well away from the breakup frequency.

The hybrid technique brings the advantages of ribbon drivers to a lower price level (ribbon woofers are big and expensive), and exploits the advantages of each technology while avoiding the drawbacks. The challenge in such a hybrid system is to achieve a seamless transition between the dynamic woofer and the ribbon tweeter, with no audible discontinuity between the drivers. When a driver is producing a loud sound, the ends of its voice coil can momentarily leave the magnetic field in which the coil sits. This robs the driver of its ability to faithfully move back and forth in response to the drive signal, again changing the music’s dynamics and creating distortion. This problem is addressed by designing drivers with a very short voice coil and a very long magnetic gap. Although a short voice coil is more susceptible to dynamic compression, it doesn’t introduce this form of non-linear distortion.

Leaving a gap between the cut-off frequencies will cause the impedance to rise in the gap. Its sometimes advised that its best to avoid using series configurations with speakers, due to the fact that that you have two coils or inductors which can induce unwanted voltage and cause distortion. You could think of power compression a bit like the aerodynamics of driving a car. When you start moving, a certain level of power from your engine sets you hurtling forwards at high speed, but as you go faster, wind resistance increases, so you stop accelerating.

The Truth About Matching Amplifier Power to Loudspeakers

As with most thingsin engineering, the art of loudspeaker design is about selecting the set oftradeoffs that make the most sense for a given design goal. While it would be nice to design a 3-waypassive loudspeaker with an 80Hz subwoofer to midrange-woofer crossoverfrequency, the crossover parts at this frequency are pretty expensive. This is one application where activecrossovers have a huge advantage over passive crossovers. Since the Peerless XXLS woofer response getsa little funky above 700Hz, we will shoot for a crossover frequency a minimumof an octave below to reduce the amount of response shaping required.

The oldest form of loudspeaker design dates back to the 17th century with the advent of the megaphone. How horns manage to amplify sounds without any additional power is a miracle of basic physics. The solution is to put a Low Pass Filter (or LPF) in series with the Woofer, this filters out high frequencies, so that the woofer is only producing sounds that are in its operating range. The graph below show a typical 18″ subwoofer, the impedance is shown on the scale on the left hand side. Very few amplifiers will run happily into impedances below 2 ohms, and there is a strong possibility you can damage the amplifier by plugging too many speakers into it.

I have been active inthis field for over 40 years, motivated by my love for music and by a keeninterest in the difficulties of reproducing music realistically in the home. In 2002 I put out the challengeto build yourself a high performance open-baffle loudspeaker system withelectronic crossover/equalizer and multiple power amplifiers. The ORIONincorporated what I had learned from designing loudspeakers for Audio Artistryand the follow-on PHOENIX.

As the DIY iconic designer Troels Gravesenputs it, “Size Matters” and to get deep powerful bass and high efficiencyrequires a large enclosure. It ispossible to get pretty deep bass out of a smaller cabinet but the efficiencyand total acoustic power are typically much lower. For this sample project, we will set areasonable design goal of +/- 3dB from 35-20kHz with the ability to generate aminimum of 100dB SPL at 1 meter with an impedance minimum of 4 ohms.

To achieve optimal hi-fi speaker design, it is essential to understand the factors that influence it. Delve into the science behind hi-fi speaker design by exploring the critical elements that shape its performance. Discover the significance of frequency response, sensitivity, impedance, and power handling in creating an exceptional audio experience. With current technology, it’s  impossible to have a single transducer that is able to reproduce the entire audio spectrum effectively, different types of loudspeaker driver are better suited to different speakers.

Digital amps deploy digital signal processing tech for accurate sound with little distortion. Low frequencies go to the subwoofer, mid-range to the woofer, and high frequencies to the tweeter. This helps each driver focus on their range and prevents distortion. It includes driver selection, enclosure design, crossover networks, and system integration. The shape and size of the cabinet are also important in determining its sound.

And our customers have nothing but appreciation, which is why they keep coming back. Our expertise ranges from professional car audio to home theater equipment to audio accessories.

The designer has to determine the best set oftradeoffs for an intended design goal. SoundEasy has built-in filter templates for delay networks if a designerdesires to design a time aligned loudspeaker for higher order filters. It is also important to note that the filterorder does not have to match for each driver in a system but it does simplifythe design. If you are just looking to getexcellent sounding speakers at much lower cost than what is availablecommercially, by all means, build someone else's fully documented project. There are a ton of projects out there that,in my opinion, obliterate most commercial offerings at the same total buildcost.
